The Call, The Welcome And The ‘Yes’ takes place on Thursday 19 September as part of the University’s inaugural lecture series.

Community music can be broadly described as non-formal music education and community musicians work in locations such as hospitals, prisons, schools and community centres.

Professor Lee Higgins, Director of the International Centre for Community Music (ICCM) which is based at York St John University, will examine the histories of community music and what can be learnt from them as well as the illustrations of practice and how might these be understood.

Professor Higgins is the current President of the International Society of Music Education and his lecture will also draw on his past work, the current projects he is involved in and future activities.

He joined York St John University in 2014 from Boston University, Massachusetts and has also held positions at Liverpool Institute for Performing Arts and the University of Limerick.

As Director of the ICCM, he aims to draw on his experiences and continue to work collaboratively with academics, practitioners, educators and policy makers to create to support the development of community music.

To book onto the lecture, which takes place in DG017 at 6.00pm, please visit the event page.
